Black Reconstruction in America
GOOD PRICE.
This is a historical study of Black Americans' role during Reconstruction, the period after the Civil War when formerly enslaved people were freed and the country attempted to rebuild itself. Written by a major Black intellectual of the early 20th century, it was the first comprehensive book-length examination of this topic and remains influential for understanding how Black people shaped American society during those crucial years.

The read
What's actually worth knowing.
- This book was groundbreaking when it came out because it centered Black people's agency and contributions during Reconstruction rather than treating them as passive subjects, which was unusual for historical scholarship at the time.
- The book covers the full span from 1860 to 1880, so it includes the Civil War period, Reconstruction itself, and the years immediately after when those gains were being rolled back.
- It's a substantial read at over 700 pages, so this is a serious historical work meant for people genuinely interested in the period rather than a quick overview.
As of Sep 1, the Black Reconstruction in America is a good price at $22.70 — versus a $24.06 typical price and a $12.57 12-month low, based on Amazon's own price history.
